COMPUTER USERS GROUP – A special interest group within VBGS. It meets 8 times a year to view presentations on a variety of topics related to electronic research. Programs include videos on specific topics of research, discussions on various genealogy software, and member presentations on current research topics. It is a more casual meeting than the monthly society meeting, offering opportunities for mentoring and helping each other. Topics this fall include: Using Family Search for Genealogical Research, Spotlight on Software (Legacy Family Tree and Roots Magic), and Converting VHS tapes, slides, and home movies to a digital format. Currently we are meeting via Zoom at 7 pm, with dates listed on the website.
HOW-TO GROUP – A formerly active group that is being revived in October 2020. Meetings will be held the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. via Zoom (unless there is a conflict). The goal is to help members in their research journey, anything from getting started to compiling a family history book.
Since the group is beginning again, we are too. The first topic will be Getting Started, followed by Sources, and then build from there. Each month we will look at different records, tools, and techniques; we’ll see how to find them and how to use them. Members are encouraged to submit suggestions for topics, whether it’s something you want to learn or something you feel you can share with others.

PUBLICITY COMMITTEE – The committee’s goal is to encourage visitors and membership by keeping everyone informed about our society. The Publicity Committee has been continuously working to update the Virginia Beach Genealogical Society website. We encourage everyone to checkout the website often for updated and informative information.
Barbara Murray, Committee Chair
SOCIAL COMMITTEE – The committee’s vision is to help members get to know each other, to have members participate in activities together, and to attract new members through social activities. The committee hosted informal Coffee Hours on Zoom over the summer, where we discussed various topics. Future plans involve field trips to historical sites, libraries, and museums, both virtually and “in person”.
