A number of resources locally and online. Most local resources will be found at the Central Library location on Virginia Beach Blvd. Online resources typically require login with your library account, resources include:* – numerous primary sources, databases, directories, guides, and much more!
America’s Obituaries and Death Notices* – National obituaries and death notices (1999-present)
HeritageQuest – many resources including City Directories, Census Map Guide, and U.S. Indian Census Rolls
Norfolk Journal and Guide – coverage of regional politics, society, and events (1921-2003)
Sanborn Maps – Fire Insurance maps (links to Library of Congress and Library of Virginia)
VBDL Digital Collections – browse the digital archives for images, books, and more.

*Available for use at library locations. (Off-site access is available for while under current Covid-19 restrictions.)

The collection is the largest repository for local and regional history. If you don’t have local ancestors though, don’t worry, there’s probably still something for you in the vast collection of books and digital materials. The library also has state-of-the-art equipment you can use, including large format scanners.
